  A British proposal to join a North American trade pact cannot be considered until the EU-UK dispute over the Brexit deal between Northern Ireland is resolved, a leading US Democrat has said. Congressman Richard Neal, chairman of an influential U.S. congressional committee that approves the country`s trade agreements, said the dispute over the Northern Ireland Protocol must be resolved and poses no threat to the Belfast Agreement before the British government`s proposal to join the U.S. Trade Pact, Mexico and Canada can be examined. He said Pelosi told Mr Johnson that Mr Neal was responsible for trade matters in Congress and that he told the prime minister “that if there is a threat to the Good Friday deal – any danger – there can be no trade deal”. U.S. Congressman Richard Neal warned that a future U.S.-U.K. trade deal was in limbo when he condemned Britain`s decision to postpone implementation of a significant part of the Brexit deal. Britain has argued that the decision to delay the introduction of controls is necessary to keep goods on shelves in Northern Ireland.
